Noise, Nihan Su. Digital photography and illustration, Inkjet Print, 22 x 17 inches, 2022

“Noise,” was made after progressive hearing and vision loss (experienced following repeat Covid infections which caused tinnitus, visual snow syndrome, and auditory hallucinations that eventually required me needing hearing aids) altered how they perceived both myself and the world around me as an already-disabled person. I can no longer hear “silence” or see without static- like distortion, which is why the piece is called “noise.” In its original form, this noisiness was represented as an animated portrait that was projected onto a wall. Viewers can see this in the form of a GIF by scanning a QR code bow.

My work aims to ask how one’s (dis)ability might affect how they move throughout the world as a shared community, and how one’s identity and actions can both impact and shape that community.
